Week 15: Touring California's Famous Hearst Castle

Week 15: Touring California's Famous Hearst Castle

"Truth is not only stranger than fiction, it is more interesting." - William Randolph Hearst

What did I do:

While on a weekend getaway in Paso Robles, we stopped by several vineyards from super popular JUSTIN Winery to up and coming Graveyard Vineyard. On the final leg of the trip, we stopped by infamous Hearst Castle for a guided tour.

Who was with me:

I was joined by my friend David.

What did I learn:

I learned the history of the Hearst family, how they acquired their wealth, the many renovations the castle has gone through and the famous celebrities and world leaders who have come through the castle during its hay day. It was a surprise to me that the 18 tower bells are controlled by a small piano inside the castle.

The mustard and ketchup bottles were used by Mr. Hearst to bring a modern look to an otherwise medieval inspired dining room.

I loved the abundance of gardens and artwork, both inside and outside the castle. In fact, the tapestries on the walls depict famous battle scenes. My particular favorite was of the battle between Hannibal and Scipio Africanus.

Would I do this again:

Although the castle was fascinating, in the future, I'd like to tour other castles around the world. I am looking forward to trips to Western Europe. I'd indulge in the medieval history, the architecture and the charm.
