Week 14: Making history, Unveiling of LA's Freedom Sculpture
"Whenever you can, act as a liberator. Freedom, Dignity, Wealth - these three together constitute the greatest happiness of humanity. If you bequeath all three to your people, their love for you will never die." Cyrus the Great
What did I do:
Being Iranian born, growing up I learned all about Cyrus the Great and his many contributions to humanity. Though, to my surprise, many of my fellow Americans were not aware of this great king or how he impacted history centuries after his body turned to dust.
On July 4th, tens of thousands of people gathered in LA for the unveiling of the Freedom Structure, a crowd-funded monument celebrating freedom, cultural diversity and inclusiveness.
There was a live concert, fire works, an inspiring speech by Mayor Garcetti and a glorious unveiling of the sculpture.
What did I learn:
I learned a lot. You will too, just watch this week's episode. Aside from a refresher about the Persian influence on the Constitution and human rights, i learned about the ideation and funding of the Freedom Sculpture. With over a million supporters, from all across America and over 50 countries around the world, the Freedom Sculpture has become the most widely crowd-supported monumental gift in U.S. History.
We also got to hear the designing architect, Cecil Balmond, speak about what the sculpture means to him. The design is inspired by the Cyrus Cylinder. "The Cyrus Cylinder is talismanic of a great vision for all peoples," Balmond said. "I hope my design is an artwork which projects the cylinder's deep values, not only to L.A. but also to the world."
Would I do this again:
Since there can only be one unveiling of an art installation, I don't have the option to do this again. Having said that, I am incredibly grateful to have participated in such a unifying act by the people of LA especially during times of political turmoil. I would happily give my time and energy to causes/events/activities that lift humanity up and raise our global consciousness.
