Week 13: Writing and Reciting an Original Vagina Monologue
"The clitoris is pure in purpose. It is the only organ in the body designed purely for pleasure." - Eve Ensler
What did I do:
Years ago I worked at a Medical School in NYC. Every year, a group of female medical students would perform a set from the infamous Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler. I watched the women perform and was always amazed by their courage and enthusiasm.
I was recently invited to an eclectic dinner party, in which each guest was allocated three minutes for a creative/artistic performance. Having no real talent other than the gift of gab, I decided to be courageous and step out of my comfort zone.
I wrote and performed my own Vagina Monologue and frankly it felt like I was doing stand-up comedy. The monologue is based on a true life experience I had the summer of 2016.
Who was with me:
I attended the dinner party with my boyfriend. We had a mix of talent at the dinner, several singers, a classically trained violinist, an artist and another woman who also recited a monologue.
What did I learn:
I learned a lot about myself while writing, practicing and performing the monologue. 1) I am a lot more ballsy than I give myself credit for 2) I am hilarious 3) I enjoy performing and getting laughs.
Would I do this again:
I think once you write and recite an original vagina monologue, there is no reason to do it again. I would however attend another themed dinner party in which guests have an opportunity to share their gift with others. It was an intimate setting. We all got a front row seat to the each of the performances and experienced something very unique. Kudos to the hosts for being original and throwing a dinner party with a twist!
