Week 5: A Spiritual Plunge, Lead a Guided Meditation.
“If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.” Dalai Lama
What did I do:
The first time I read this quote it stopped me dead in my tracks and inspired me to establish a daily meditation practice. I've now been practicing mediation for years but this week I was challenged to take it a step further and actually lead a group mediation. A whole new journey for those on the spiritual path.
To prepare, I called my friend Michelle Zarrin who has been teaching meditation for years. We went on a beautiful on the search for California golden poppies. While on the hike, Michelle gave me some pointers. Later that week I created and led a small group of friends through a 15 minute meditation at our bimonthly meditation parties. Yes, I said meditation parties. Every first and third Wednesday of the month my friends and I get together, cook and share a meal, meditate for 15-20 minutes and then have some wine. We’ve built a beautiful community doing it.
Who was with me:
I was joined by all our guests and Ellie and Michelle, two amazing friends whom I have co-created meditation courses with and whom I co-host our meditation parties with. In fact, our meditations are incredible and available for free on Insight Timer and podcast.
I am the social chair for the group, and given it was my first time leading, I made sure to not invite tons of people. On average we have 20-30 friends join but thankfully keeping the guest list to a minimum helped relieve some of the pressure!
What did I learn:
Leading a meditation is a big responsibility. The people who you are leading are inviting you into their sub-conscious mind and into their hearts. It was truly an honor and I made sure to prepare in advance. I didn’t have a script to read because I wanted it to be natural. Instead, I had high level points I wanted to hit during the meditation. A few friends cried during and after the meditation and expressed how beautiful of an experience it was. I was so grateful it was a positive experience and was extremely humbled by it all. I simply connected to source and allowed the words to flow through me.
Would I do this again:
YES! I enjoyed it and would love to lead another group meditation. This time I won’t hold back on the guest list.
