Week 4: Flying Trapeze Lesson at Santa Monica Pier
"Being on a trapeze is like dreaming. I feel totally outside of myself when I'm flying." Christian Louboutin
What did I do:
Christian, I couldn't agree more. Living in NYC, I'd pass the trapeze school located on the Chelsea Pier with the desire to one day give it a try. That day never game, and I moved back to Los Angeles in 2014. Lucky for me, Trapeze School New York (TSNY) actually has a location at the Santa Monica Pier. Spent an afternoon at the Santa Monica Pier flying through the air with the help of the Trapeze School New York, Los Angeles.
Who was with me:
My adventurous and daredevil friend Mariola joined me for this new experience. Funny thing, a few months before I started Thrive at 35, her and I went hiking and she had mentioned to me how non-athletic she was. Could have fooled me! She ended up loving trapeze so much she took several classes and was able to do some really cool tricks in the months that followed.
What did I learn:
For starters, the platform is much higher than it looks once you are actually up there and ready to jump. Similar to skydiving, no one is going to push you off that ledge, you have to go for it on your own. As you fly through the air, you are focused on the task at hand, get an amazing view of the ocean, and engage muscles you didn't even know you had. You'll be sore for a few days but it is definitely worth the experience.
Would I do this again:
I would definitely try trapeze again, especially at the Santa Monica Pier. The staff is knowledgeable, encouraging and allow you to go at your own pace. I love the feeling of letting it all go, hanging upside down with the security (big net below) of knowing you are safe to explore. I'll have less fear the next time around!
