Week 21: Facing an Old Fear, Pennywise the Dancing Clown!
"When you're a kid, you think the universe revolves around you. That you'll always be protected and cared for. Then, one day, you realize that's not true." - Billy Denbrough
What did I do:
In 1990, when the original mini-series IT was released, my family had just moved to California from Iran. Mom and dad had no clue what damage watching a movie like IT can have on the psyche of an eight year-old with a highly active imagination. For over a decade this ravenous clown haunted me while I was awake, hiding under the covers and after I finally fell asleep from pure exhaustion. In retrospective, the spiritually inclined Neloo understands that I allowed this clown to take my peace. But back then, it didn't seem like I had a say in the matter.
True to the story, 27 years later, the murderous Pennywise the Dancing Clown has reemerged. This time in a two-part feature film, strutting an avant-garde costume, and a satanic smile. People who thrive aren't scared of silly clowns so I decided to face one of my biggest childhood fears and watch this movie.
Who was with me:
My boyfriend David and I went to the movie, we weren’t able to convince anyone else to join us.
What did I learn:
What unfolded that night in the theater is still a mystery to me. You’ll see in the episode that the night took an unusual shift. I decided, while in the theater, to take some footage of the movie to later use in my episode. Snapshots of the scariest scenes as IT torments the 7 children of Derry. Well, that didn’t go so well. Apparently, it's a major copyright issue! You’ll have to watch this week’s episode to see what happened. At the end of it all, I can say with absolute certainty that I am no longer scared of IT. The fear was knocked out of me.
Would I do this again:
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I learned a few valuable lessons.
